The REEF Story

In 1984, brothers Fernando and Santiago Aguerre founded REEF, driven by their passion for the beach and surfing. Their goal was to design ultra-comfortable, high-quality products that perfectly matched their lifestyle. The result was sandals that seamlessly fit into any environment, from the beach to the street and everywhere in between. Today, REEF sandals are more than just a shoe; they embody the REEF DREAM.

Our impact initiatives since 1984

The beach is the heart and soul of REEF. We believe that the beach is where fun and freedom come to life and that there is a deep connection between our well-being and our beaches. We are committed to protecting our ocean, preserving our reefs and continuing to create access to our beaches.

We protect our coral reefs

We are committed to global awareness, scientific innovation and sharing knowledge about the importance of coral reefs to our planet and how we can work together to protect them. We are working with ambassador, chemist and professional surfer Dr. Cliff Kapono to create positive change for coral conservation. We have successfully mapped 2 reefs.

Striving for sustainability

Sustainability has been part of REEF’s DNA since the beginning. REEF founders Santiago and Fernando Aguerre are surfers and beach lovers, and they did their best to create products with the least possible impact. Today, over 37 years later, we continue these ideologies with even more emphasis because they are as relevant now as they were then. In 2007, REEF’s mission was to use renewable, recycled and/or organic materials wherever possible. This was also the time that REEF planted our flag to become 100% PVC free, something we can still claim to this day.

Natural materials

We use materials such as cotton, jute, real cork and wooden elements to create a product derived from elements from nature.

Eco-foam

Our EVA and rubber compounds contain a percentage of recycled content. We also added a bio-based EVA to our midsoles, sourced from renewable sugar cane in Brazil.
