Maps are the cornerstones
of every successful civilization.

They show us where our treasures are and provide direction for how we navigate toward a better future.

How is mapping done?

Waterproof action cameras, iPhones and drones. Using what’s known as structure from motion photogrammetry to recreate reef breaks in 3D, anyone with a digital screen can experience what life is like beneath the curl and ultimately gain insight into the best waves on the planet.

Why is mapping important?

To map the current condition of reefs at surf breaks.
--
Provide information about better restoration or maintenance measures.
--
Evaluate management practices over time.

How does it affect you?

Knowledge is power and if we understand our coral reefs better, we can better protect our oceans and ecosystems and ultimately create a healthier world for everyone. Furthermore, the better we understand the wave systems, the better we can surf the waves.

REEF X MegaLab

We’ve teamed up with The Mega Lab to do Mapping the Right Way. The Mega Lab is a non-profit ocean research group that develops new technology to protect our oceans and delivers it to the communities that need it most. It’s led by Professor Cliff Kapono, a professional surfer, chemist and journalist.
